Growing up, I had one thing in mind, I wanted to be in tech. However, lacking a good career coach and someone to look up to, I was in a dilemma of choosing between avionics and electrical engineering. One thing I was certain of is that I would never be a doctor, I hated it and I disappointed my mom who was for the idea.
After my high-school graduation, I ended up choosing a different career path, software development. For me, I felt it was a little deviation now that no screwdrivers were involved. I still remember my lecturer introducing me to HTML which seemed awkward. I wasn’t aware of what those “poorly punctuated sentences” would achieve. I later came to love it and we became inseparable.
Denis, a friend of mine came over to my place and opened a 12hr C++ video tutorial. I was so curious because, in class, I was understanding absolutely nothing. I found it fun and I ended up downloading over 200GB of video tutorials just to learn in my free time. At that moment, I learned any programming language I came across and how to hack NASA and I ended up being ahead of everyone.
Days later, the same guy, introduced me to Adobe XD. He was taking his final-year project, an android app, and he used Adobe XD to visualize his ideas. Before I installed any design software, I lied to my former high school friend that I’m a web designer and I spent a whole weekend on YouTube learning Adobe XD & designing this sh#t. Learning UI/UX design is the best I have ever done because despite giving me a better understanding of software architectures, it also introduced me to other skills such as Digital Marketing.
Is my aviation dream dead? Absolutely No. Though I found refuge in software design and development, I think the sky isn’t the limit. Am still young and ambitious. For electrical engineering, I feel I have already achieved it by being on my computer daily.
